Pensions

Whether you're starting a pension, reviewing what you have or getting ready to retire, we'll help you plan for the retirement you want.

Why plan your pension?

A pension is a tax-efficient way to save for retirement. You get income tax relief on what you pay in, within Revenue limits based on your age and earnings, and your fund can grow free of tax until you retire.

The State Pension on its own may not be enough for the lifestyle you want. The earlier you start, the more choices you'll have later.

Pension options

  • PRSAs and personal pensions

Pensions you own yourself. They suit self-employed people and employees without a company pension, and they stay with you if you change jobs.

  • Company pensions and AVCs

If your employer offers a pension, it's worth making the most of it. Additional voluntary contributions (AVCs) let you pay in more.

  • Executive pensions

For company directors. Your company can pay into your pension, which can be a tax-efficient way to take value from your business.

  • Your options at retirement

You can usually take part of your fund as a tax-free lump sum, then choose an annuity, which pays a guaranteed income for life, or an Approved Retirement Fund (ARF), which keeps your money invested.

  • Warning: The value of your investment may go down as well as up.
  • Warning: If you invest in this product you may lose some or all of the money you invest.
  • Warning: Past performance is not a reliable guide to future performance.

Common questions

What happens to my pension if I change jobs?

It stays yours. Depending on the scheme, you can usually leave it where it is or transfer it, for example to your new employer's scheme or a PRSA. We'll help you weigh up the options.

Do I get tax relief on my contributions?

Yes. Your contributions get income tax relief at your highest rate of tax, within Revenue limits based on your age and earnings.

I have pensions from old jobs. What should I do with them?

We can review them and explain your options, including whether bringing them together makes sense for you.

How much should I be paying in?

It depends on when you want to retire and the income you'll need. We'll work out a plan that fits your budget.
