What is life insurance?
Life insurance, also called life cover or life assurance, pays out a lump sum if you die while your policy is in place. That money can help your family keep up with the mortgage, bills and everyday costs, and plan for the future.
You choose how much cover you want and for how long, and pay a regular premium. The cost depends mainly on your age, your health, whether you smoke, and the amount and length of the cover.

Types of cover
Term life cover
Covers you for a set number of years, for example until your mortgage is paid off or your children are grown up. It pays out if you die during that time.
Mortgage protection
Pays off what's left on your mortgage if you die. Lenders usually require it before you draw down a mortgage on your home, but you don't have to take the policy your lender offers.
Serious illness cover
Pays a lump sum if you're diagnosed with one of the illnesses listed in your policy. You can add it to life cover or take it on its own.
Whole of life cover
Covers you for the rest of your life, as long as you keep paying the premiums. Some people use it to help their family pay inheritance tax, through what's called a Section 72 policy.

Common questions
How much life cover do I need?
It depends on your mortgage and other debts, who relies on your income and for how long, and any cover you already have, such as death-in-service benefit through work. We'll work it out with you.
What's the difference between joint and dual life cover?
Joint life cover insures two people under one policy and pays out once, on the first death. Dual life cover gives each person their own cover in one plan, so it can pay out twice.
Can I use life cover I already have for my mortgage?
Often, yes. An existing policy can usually be assigned to your lender if the amount and term are right. We can check what you already have.
Can I get cover if I have a medical condition?
In many cases, yes. Each insurer looks at health conditions differently, which is one reason it helps to compare the market.
